BUILDINGÂ THE ROBOT
The thing about robotics is that you have to build a robot. These steps are how you go about doing that.
FRAMEWORK
Building Process
BUY MATERIALS & THE KIT OF PARTS
The Kit Of Parts and KOP Chassis are crucial things for every team because they contain many required components, as well as many very useful parts. Teams should also get materials they know they will need ie. stock, shaft, motors, etc. This is the time to get everything you would need before the season starts so you are ready to go when kickoff comes.
DESIGN & CAD
This is when you design the robot you are going to build for the game of the season. You figure out what you want to do, how you want to play the game, and what you want to put on your robot. This is also when you start doing Computer Aided Design (CAD) to create your robot in a virtual space before going and building it in the real world.
MACHINING & ASSEMBLY
After the robot is designed, this is when you take the parts that were designed in CAD and turn them into actual things. You cut and drill the stock you bought earlier in the season into the parts that they are supposed to be and put everything together to make the body for your robot. This is also the time you start putting together your electronics system.
PROGRAMMING & CONTROLS
If the mechanical stuff was the body of your robot, the electronics are the nervous system, and the programming is the brain. This is when you make the robot do what you want it to, whether it's autonomous or teleoperated. This is what makes the robot more than just a husk.
